I’ll have to give kudos here to Seagate as I actually emailed them with the issue in the end and they were very responsive to the solution. You can try changing the drive letters but I didn’t need to. Go to Start/Search and type diskmgmt.msc (or right click start button and ‘run’) and run as administrator.Ģ.In Disk Management, right click the Partition and choose Properties/Security/Advanced/Owner and add your user account as the Owner of the drive. This is the quick and simple way that worked for me:ġ. The drive wasn’t dead as it still worked on an older machine running Windows 7 so there had to be a solution. Reading through on line, I saw messages in forums where people simply said the HD is dead. USB Portable Hard Drive | Location Not Available | Access Denied | Windows 8Ī couple of weeks ago, my portable hard drive stopped working on my Windows 8 machine and kept displaying this message of ‘Unknown Device’, ‘Location Not Available’ and ‘Access Denied’ which is strange considering it was still picking up that there was a Seagate drive of some sort being connected.
